I work in a busy Dermatology practice. We work all day together and as with any job, we swap secrets. It is no surprise that we talk about skin care- a LOT. Keep reading if you want to know the best secrets straight out of my Dermatology practice!
- Get your beauty rest
Getting at least eight hours of sleep translates to giving tired skin the time it craves to rest and recharge. Day explains that stress hormones like cortisol plummet at night while growth hormones simultaneously rise—creating the perfect breeding ground for the cellular repair that makes our skin look clear and glowy. (Yes, that is a word!)
- Intermittent fasting is not only for weight loss
This may surprise you: When you do or don’t eat (and how long you fast while you sleep between dinner and breakfast) could actually make a huge difference in regard to the health of your skin.
What is intermittent fasting? It means a 14-hours-a-day fast—eight hours as you’re sleeping at night and then two to three hours on either side of that. It helps regulate metabolism and energy even more than sleep and that allows the skin to repair itself. For example, first meal at 12 and nothing to eat after 8pm.
- Drench yourself in sunscreen
I know you knew that was coming. But seriously, most people do not apply enough and don’t reapply. Also, don’t forget your ears, your hairline, and the back of the neck. These areas are often neglected. I also suggest wearing gloves while driving if you really want to have hard core protection against age spots!
- Antioxidants are your BFF
- Cut down your sugar intake
If you are like me, you are guaranteed to break out the day after a sugar binge. Why? Because sugar is inflammatory and inflammation causes acne and accelerates aging. Do you need to give up your beloved treats all together? Of course not, just limit them and think about the timing. Like, don’t binge on peanut butter cups and booze the Friday before your wedding. That is a recipe for disaster!
