Breaking news: Everyone has skin. And some people like when that skin looks nice, regardless of their gender, and that’s why they go out of their way to make it gleam, glow, and look lit-from-within.
Men are often imposed with traditional, nearly unattainable standards for masculinity. Yet, taking care of yourself has nothing to do with “manliness” or sexuality. I have many male patients who have the same concerns as my female patients. There are probably many more who are concerned but don’t want to ask. There are also some who use the same cheap bar of soap for everything from shampoo to shaving cream.
When I advise skin care routines for men, I always try to keep it simple (unless he says he is ready for an all-out routine). Keep reading for some easy tips to get your guy in on the skin care fun!
- Skip the harsh soap
Men often use strong, harsh soap. Words like “gentle” and “moisturizing” are for girls, right? (Of course not!) Swap his soap for something gentle. If you have to, put it in a generic plastic bottle.
- Wash face daily and after exercise
You would not believe how many guys sweat like crazy in the gym, and just go about their day. To make it super easy to wash after work out, stash some micellar wipes in his gym bag and watch them disappear. (Somehow, using YOUR products is more acceptable, lol)
- Moisturize
Can I be candid here? Men do not moisturize. They just don’t. This is a general term, and of course there are exceptions, but 9-10 of my patients tell me they never use a moisturizer. Several reasons for that include lack of time and difficulty applying due to things like hairy skin and hard to reach places. I would suggest men try a spray on moisturizer such as Aquaphor’s moisturizing spray. It absorbs easily and your guy can hit all the areas he wants to.
- Choose combo skin care
Men want fast and easy. The fewer steps the more likely they are to use it. Try getting your guy to use a multi-function product such as a night serum with retinol. Retinol is a great all in one ingredient. It treats mild acne, improves fine lines and wrinkles, reduces the appearance of pores and evens out skin tone. They usually come in a very light formula which makes it easy to apply.
- Don’t underestimate the power of packaging
Men are more likely to use products designed just for them. They may contain the exact same ingredients you use but when it is in a black bottle that says “men’s formula” it makes a huge difference. I often suggest an independent brand called Sean Dubois skin care for men. https://www.getseandubois.com/
Lastly, don’t underestimate your power of influence. Give the men in your life a skin care gift, or give them a compliment, you would be surprised to know they are listening!
